OUR LATEST STORYSACK
Here at last are some photos of our most recent storysack WILBIE - FOOTIE MAD!

It is all about Wilbie - a duck who wants to be in the football team with all his friends. As you can see he had lots of friends - all beautifully knitted, and a green felt football pitch! We hope the children at St George's School enjoy reading this book and playing with all the characters as much as we enjoy making them.

We are now working on "The Gruffalo" - watch this space!

Three Little Pigs

Another Storysack has been safely delivered to St George's School, and the children were delighted with it all, but particularly with the more "lifelike" mother pig and her piglets!

Now we are preparing another one all about a little boy duck who wants to play football!

Annual Meeting & HS2 - 9th November

On Tuesday 9th November we will be holding our annual meeting and electing a new committee - we need 1 more member to make a full committee and to ensure we can keep up our full programme of events and activities. Being a committee member is fun! So come and join in!

After the short business part of the meeting we will be having a presentation on "HS2 and its impact on the Chilterns" which will be of interest to all of us, so do come along. This is being given by Keith Hoffmeister on behalf of the Chiltern Society and should give a clear indication of how the Chilterns will be affected. (By the way, if you wonder why I've included this photo, it's because it shows some of our members on one of our walks in the Chiltern countryside!)

The meeting starts at 7.45pm in the Village Hall, Cokes Lane, Little Chalfont.

Garden Games
On a pleasant day in mid June nearly 30 members gathered for an afternoon of fun and there was plenty for us to do - skittles, quoits, giant jenga, mini golf and mini croquet, as well as guessing the weight of the cake and the name of the teddy bear! Everyone joined in, with jenga being particularly popular and attracting a large audience as well. Points were awarded in all the games and a prize was given to the person who scored the highest number of points.

We were raising money partly for our funds, and partly for the Buckinghamshire Federation 90th Anniversary bursary for Denman College. And of course after all those games there was a delicious tea prepared by our committee.

Acorn Sailor Story Sack

We have finally completed our Story Sack - The Acorn Sailor, and presented it at an assembly at St George's School. We think the finished result is lovely, with beautiful knitted characters, some very realistic "sandcastles", a countryside/river and sea fabric collage for the background and of course a boat for the knitted acorn!

There are some lovely details - the fisherman has his very own fishing rod and basket, the ship's captain has a very fine beard and gold braid and buttons on his uniform, the little girl in her striped dungarees has wonderful blue spectacles, just as in the book and the collage has trees and flowers appliqued on to add interest! So there is lots for the children to see and play with, while hopefully getting to love reading.

We will start another story in September - we haven't decided what yet so are looking for ideas.

Anniversary tapestry - our new textile treasure

Inspired by the wonderful "Textile Treasures" exhibition put on by NFWI, we decided to create our own textile treasure to celebrate our 50 years as a busy WI. A group of us got together to decide how best to go about this, and as a result we decided to depict some of the many activities we have done through the years. We designed it all ourselves and then we had "Sit and Stitch" sessions so that as many members of the Institute as possible could come and sew a bit of the tapestry. Even those who thought they couldn't sew contributed, and enjoyed it too! The central panel shows the daffodils which are such a feature of the village in the spring.

The activities which we chose out of the many things we have done in our 50 years are - games evenings, book group, walks, garden group, book group, campaign for a zebra crossing and phone box, story sacks, our cups of tea, the millennium park bench we bought, art group, drama and singing group, produce shows and eco teams

Village flowerbed

One of the many ways we celebrated our 50th Anniversary was to plant up a large raised bed on the village green. We chose a golden colour scheme, and raised lots of plants from seed, grew on plug plants and bought some bedding plants to fill the gaps. A team of us cleared the site and planted up all our plants. We then drew up a rota for watering through the summer - this was, surprisingly, a pleasure as we always got thanks and compliments from other residents when we were tending our plants!

Story Sacks

Over several years we have been making Story Sacks for local schools - these are aimed at helping children to read and to grow to love books. We create all the characters in a book, either by sewing or knitting, provide some word games, and a tape of the story, all in one "sack" so that the children can act out the story through the toys.
Just before Christmas we knitted The Christmas Story, but we have also completed The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Noah's Ark, Jack and the Beanstalk, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and many others. We love working out how to make the characters and accessories, and we hope the children love the results!

After our first Storysack meeting of the year we are now starting another book called "The Acorn Sailor". To "illustrate" this, we will have to make a boat, some more knitted people, a fabric river scene, sand castles and lock gates and of course an acorn! More photos when we have made some of these items, but here is a picture of the book's front cover to give you an idea!

We have just had our first storysack meeting of the autumn and the new headmaster at St George's is very keen for us to carry on making storysacks, and has asked if we will do "The Three Little Pigs". We have done this one before for Bell Lane School, so we know just how to make the three little houses as well as the pigs, so hopefully we will get this one done in time for Christmas.
